Should Birth Control be Free?

Many American argue that birth control should be free to all woman since insurance itself is so expensive on its own making it unfair for lower income women to afford the ridiculous copays or deductibles.  Since 2011 woman haven’t paid for their monthly birth control prescriptions thanks to the Affordable Care Act placed by Barack Obama, but all may change since Donald Trump is getting rid of the Affordable Care Act. Denying many women all over the United State to get their birth control for free, and from my understanding this only applies if the women that have insurance, that being a personal insurance obtained from their job or government issued insurance such as Medicaid. Still leaving many women struggling to obtain their birth control at a reasonable price they can afford.

I believe birth control should continue to be a free benefit for all woman with or without insurance. Birth control is not just a contraceptive it has many benefits for woman for example it can reduce women’s cancer risk, one being ovarian cancer. Also, different types of birth control can help treat other conditions like heavy menstrual bleeding and most commonly use among teenagers for acne problems. It could help prevent so many unintended pregnancies among teenagers and in the lower-income women. In 2011, 45 percent of 6.1 million pregnancies in the United States were unintended that not continuing miscarriages. 42 percent of unintended pregnancies ended in abortion and 58 percent ended in child birth.

It cost the government more money to support an unintended pregnancy than it is to provide free birth control to all American women. In 2010 51 percent of the nearly 4 million births in the United States were paid for by government health insurance like Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Public insurance covered 68 percent of the 1.5 million births that were unplanned, versus the 38 percent that were planned. Overall, the government spent $21 billion on unintended pregnancies that year.

The government would rather spend billions of dollars every year supporting unintended pregnancies than provide free birth control or long -lasting methods like IUD's.  It would be great for birth control to be free for anyone that needs it or wants to use it but there could also be a set copay for the consumer that is affordable and reasonable.

  1. According to the blog titled " Should Birth Control be Free?" that was published by Anna Flores on December 5th, 2018. Blogger states that the Birth control should be free with or without insurance. I agree with blogger that birth control should be free or reasonable price should be charged, Some women can't afford birth control or don't have insurance. I would say that making completely free is not only a solution but if there is reasonable price, co-pay or coverage of insurance that will be great help for each and every women, but this kind of treatment are pretty much expensive. Obviously without birth control, people are probably going to have unwanted pregnancies. If they can't afford birth control, they probably won't be able to afford abortions or adoption lawyers. This will put children in probably bad living situations such as poor homes or foster care. As blogger provided statistics about Birth control, Yes There are too many unwanted pregnancies and abortions in the United States. Prevention is key to an unwanted pregnancy and making birth control free or reasonable price to everyone will make it more of an incentive for people to use it.

  2. I agree with the article “Should Birth Control be Free?”. In this article, it states that birth control being free and covered by the affordable care act is a good measure in preventing pregnancies and helping women with other medical needs. After doing my own research on this topic, I found some more great statistics that support why birth control should be free. According to beddsider.org, unplanned pregnancies cost U.S tax payers 12 billion per year. 12 billion dollars is a significant amount of money that could be used elsewhere. This amount is significantly reduced when birth control is free for all women. It also significantly reduces the amount of abortions. This protects the health of the woman since abortions can come with many risks and saves women money because of the cost of the abortion. All around, having free birth control saves money. Many women said they are on birth control strictly because they cannot afford to become pregnant. When a woman does not have birth control and becomes pregnant when they were not ready, this significantly increases their likelihood of living in poverty. Providing free birth control prevents women from living a life of poverty. Birth control also has medical uses such as clearing acne, preventing cancer and reducing menstrual cramps. When we make birth control cost money, it makes managing these medical problems harder. Overall, the benefits of free birth control significantly out weight any of its negatives.
