Why Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

One of the most controversial topics in the United States is the legalization of marijuana, many are against it and many if favor. We are in 2018 a lot of things have changed, and illegal marijuana should be a thing of the past. Why not use something that is causing so much crime and harm to the nation, and use it in the federal and states favor? The legalization of marijuana has many economic benefits like job creations, lower crime rates, and added tax revenue for federal or state government.

There are many pros and cons about the legalization of marijuana but am here to shade some light on some of the things in favor of marijuana.  The legalization of cannabis could produce more jobs for Americans for example more farmers, processors, distributors, and retails jobs will be available. Major industries could also have an opportunity by producing new and improved greenhouses for farmers that will help produced better product. The dismantling of major drug cartels and lowering crime rates around Unites States boarders will also be a huge win. Helping the states government to save money in the process for example the fewer court cases that involve marijuana results in fewer incarcerations, meaning the state doesn’t have to spend money on another inmate saving millions of dollars in the process.

Another major reason for the legalization of cannabis is for its medical use. Many patients use marijuana in different forms for different medical reasons, many still buy it illegally making it unsafe for the consumer laced with harmful products causing more harm than good.  Legalizing marijuana on the other hand provided an improvement of quality and safety control, reassuring the consumer that what they are consuming is safe and run no risk of ending at the hospital because of a bad reaction to the product. Patients with epilepsy use cannabis oils that is rubbed on the bottom of their feet to help them control the episode they may be experiencing. Other patients also benefit form marijuana for example cancer patients, people suffering for chronic pain, migraines, and Crohn’s disease. The list goes on and on, but many patients currently still buy marijuana illegally making it harder for them to get any type of relief for their medical problems.

Many will still disagree on this topic saying that marijuana should be illegal, that it is a drug and people should just go see a doctor to get prescription medications instead. What for so they can run the risk of overdosing and in some cases lead to death? Although marijuana does not cure their disease or medical condition it does help improve their quality of life. Legalizing marijuana will help thousands of people by either proving a better paying jobs or helping others with a medical problem.

  1. I agree with Anna Flores that for numerous reasons Marijuana should be legalized. Something that I’d like to add to this topic is the important issue of those jailed for Marijuana charges. This demographic also skews black, unsurprisingly. Not because more black people smoke, but because the resources to punish every person caught, was not available so law enforcement had to be more selective. I agree weed should be legalized, but with that we ought to be diligent when it comes to getting those jailed for it -within reason- freed.
If it’s decided that marijuana is not a bad/harmful substance by lawmakers then those jailed for it even when it was illegal should have their sentences lifted. It is not as if when weed is legalized that the substance and its effects drastically change; it’s only that lawmakers changed their minds. People don’t deserve to be criminalized over something such as non-violent Pot related charges, especially if it becomes legal.
It is very bizarre to think that Tobacco/cigarettes are totally legal even though it is widely known how much of a killer it is. Versus Weed, which appears to do more good than harm. Supposedly, given how insanely rich tobacco companies are it gets less bizarre, and a bit more revealing of this society. Personally, I believe in several years, at least, Marijuana will likely become legal nationwide. Tobacco on the other-hand may take longer.
The health benefits of marijuana is something of worthwhile weight to be considered, but as should the recreational aspect of the drug as well. If people get to keep cigarettes for their aesthetic purposes and no health benefits, then it is hard see why Pot cannot be legal. Most importantly, when Marijuana gets legalized it is important not to forget those who were thrown into prison for it. Since, America won’t necessarily free people of their sentences, because of a law change, it’s important that those who are free try to help those in need. It seems some states are on the right track and are creating laws to ensure these people’s rights. It is important that as a country we stay on this track, and keep an eye out for states that legalize in the future, and what they do with those who had been criminalized for it.
